Disclaimer

Everything here is one hunter’s experience written down. It is not instruction, and it is not a substitute for your state’s regulations.

Hunting is regulated, and the rules are yours to know

Season dates, legal weapons, tag rules, transport and reporting requirements are set by state agencies and change every year.

Nothing on this site should be read as permission to do anything. Before you hunt, read the current regulations for the state and unit you are in. If our writing and the agency disagree, the agency is right and we are out of date.

Safety and field care

Firearms, archery equipment, knives and backcountry travel all carry real risk.

We describe how we do things. You are responsible for how you do them. Advice here about handling meat is based on our own experience, not on food safety certification. If you are unsure whether an animal or a piece of meat is safe, ask your state wildlife agency or a butcher.

Some states test for disease in deer populations and publish guidance on handling and processing. Follow that guidance. It is written by people with laboratories.

Gear and outbound links

We link to makers, retailers and agencies when a link is genuinely useful to the reader.

We do not run affiliate tracking links and we do not operate a store. We may have a relationship with a company we mention, and where that shapes what we write we will say so in the article itself. We have no control over outside sites and we are not responsible for their content, their products or their claims.

Errors

We get things wrong. When we find out, we fix the article rather than quietly deleting it, and we say what changed. If you have spotted something, write to [email protected].
